Alibaba launches free AI agent for college applications
Alibaba's Qwen has introduced China's first full-cycle college application agent, offering free access to all 12.9 million Gaokao candidates. The agent goes beyond simple chatbots by incorporating persistent memory, proactive planning, and tool-use capabilities to help students manage reports, calendars, and Q&A throughout the complex admission process.
Trained on 400,000 AI-generated student simulations and optimized with seven distinct reward functions, the agent achieves expert-level judgment in recommending schools and strategies. This deep reinforcement learning approach allows the system to mimic the nuanced decision-making of experienced counselors, a stark departure from conventional rule-based tools.
The launch is particularly significant for students in county-level schools who often lack access to professional guidance. By narrowing the information gap in high-stakes educational decisions, the agent exemplifies how AI can promote equity—a critical factor in a system where every point on the Gaokao can alter a student's trajectory.
