Meta has launched its Meta Business Agent, an artificial intelligence assistant designed to help businesses manage sales and customer interactions across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. The agent can answer product queries, recommend items, book appointments, and complete transactions, with future updates planned to include market research and competitive intelligence features. This move positions Meta's vast consumer messaging ecosystem as a direct commerce channel.

Over one million businesses had already adopted earlier chatbot versions on Meta's platforms, indicating strong demand for automated customer engagement. The new Business Agent is initially free, though Meta plans to introduce paid subscription tiers later. The company also unveiled a Business Agent Platform that integrates with third-party services including Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, allowing merchants to connect their existing commerce and support tools directly into Meta's messaging apps.

By packaging agentic capabilities into high-volume consumer messaging apps, Meta is effectively transforming communication layers into commerce surfaces. However, for operational enterprise deployment, critical gaps remain in enterprise-grade controls, depth of integration with existing systems, and compliance with data privacy and regulatory standards — factors that will determine whether businesses can fully rely on the platform for mission-critical workflows.
